According to U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the leading cause of death among teenagers between the ages of 15 to 19 continues to be fatal car accidents. By taking an active role in educating teen drivers and enforcing safety rules, parents can help their teenagers avoid life-threatening crashes.

The following are steps parents can take to help teen drivers stay safe:

• Be a positive role model
• Make sure teen drivers follow safety and driving rules
• Supervise driving lessons with teen driver
• Make sure your teen driver practices for at least six months prior to receiving his or her license
• Educate your teenager about the importance of avoiding substance abuse
• Always wear a safety belt and enforce this rule to your teenager
• Obey road rules and signs, including staying within the speed limit, following construction signs, and avoiding all road hazards
• Do not text or use your cell phone and educate your teenager about the dangers of these activities while driving
• Restrict the number of passengers in your teenager’s vehicle
• Do not let your teenager drive while upset or angry
• Set a curfew time and implement consequences when this time is not honored
• Install a Video Drive Recorder or Car Black Box in the vehicle that can monitor your teenager’s driving habits (these devices also restrict speeding)
