It’s officially fall, and that means two things—the leaves change colors, and cold/flu season begins. With cooler weather and the start of a new school year, more people get sick, and germs quickly spread. So takeprecautions now! Follow these 3 tips to avoid feeling under the weather.

  1. Stay hydrated—It may sound like a simple solution, but hydration
is crucial for an optimum immune system. As the temperature drops, our
bodies become less hydrated. Dehydration strains our bodies and the immunity
barriers that prevent infection. So drink plenty of water to keep your defenses
up! It’s typically recommended to aim for 8, 8-oz. glasses of water each day. Though
this is a good rule of thumb, it’s now suggested
that women drink 9, and men drink 13, 8oz. glasses of water each day. You can
even buy a cool reusable water bottle
    to make hydration more exciting!
  2. Skip the sugar— If you have a sweet tooth (like me), this tip
may be difficult to follow. But if possible, avoid eating foods with refined
sugar—that means cookies, cake, orange juice, and candy (among others)! Refined
sugars impair the function of white blood cells, and consequently, weaken the
    immune system.
  3. No hands on your face—As much as possible, avoid touching
your face. It’s such a common habit so it’s easy to overlook. However, your
face is vulnerable when it comes to germs, and our hands source plenty of them.
The easiest way to transmit illness is
through mucous membranes—aka eyes, mouth, and nose. So keep your hands away!
  4. Purell—Buy it. Keep it around. Use it.
