August is ‘Happiness Happens Month,’ and we want to celebrate with you! Happiness may be a pursuit, but it’s also an attitude and way of life. So making easy changes in your routine can increase your happiness. Don’t make it complicated, just use these three simple ways on your road to happiness.   

S– Sleep. Set up a schedule, and sleep more. Sometimes it’s difficult to maintain a consistent routine for sleeping, but doing so can improve your overall well-being. Research from the American Psychologcal Association suggests that many Americans carry a “sleep debt” from consistent sleep deprivation, and that sleeping more can help promote happiness. Establishing a sleep schedule will ensure positive sleeping habits, and make it easier to get those extra ‘zzzzz’. And when you sleep more, you smile more!

V– Volunteer. Studies suggest that helping others is essential for human happiness. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin reiterates this point, and advocates service, especially to those in need. Wherever you volunteer your time, you’ll feel satisfied knowing that it truly makes a difference. And it’s these continual feelings of fulfillment that lead to long-term happiness! It’s important to enjoy the time you spend volunteering, so look at all your options and choose carefully. Websites like VolunteerMatch and Get Involved! are helpful tools to search for volunteer opportunities. In her story, Gretchen reveals that her motto is, “Do good, feel good.” It seems like we could all afford to do some more of both!   

H– Hahaha-ing. Make an effort to laugh out loud at least once a day. A recent study through UC Irvine examined the effects of laughing. In response to a funny video, the subjects experienced positive biological changes, confirming that laughter really is the best medicine! Their stress hormone levels dropped, while endorphin levels increased 27%. Their growth hormone levels even increased 87%, which indicated benefits to the immune system. So add a daily ‘LOL,’  ‘LMFAO,’ or ‘ROTFL,’ to your routine! If you’re looking to laugh, the Internet is chalk full of comedic outlets. Watch some funny YouTube clips, or skim through REDDIT for a quick fix of funny.
