As residential and commercial expansion continues into rural areas that are deer’s natural habitat, the risk of a collision with a deer on the road may increase. There are some defensive driving techniques you may practice on your motorcycle when you ride in areas where deer are known to live. It is also important to have financial protection through your California motorcycle insurance company in case of any type of collision, including one with a deer.

When riding your motorcycle in rural areas that may be home to deer, there are some things you can do to be prepared for and avoid a collision.

  • The high risk times for deer collisions are from sunset to midnight; therefore you may want to watch especially carefully for a deer sighting at these times.
  • Be careful when driving through deer crossing zones. Should you spot one deer, it is likely that there are others nearby.
  • When driving at night, you may want to use your high beam lights when there is no oncoming traffic, to make it easier for you to spot a deer in the road.

Should you strike a deer, it may not be wise to try to touch or move the animal. A wounded deer may injure you or further injure itself. The best thing to do may be to move your motorcycle off the road and call the police for assistance. You may also want to contact your California motorcycle insurance agent to report the accident, and begin the process of getting any motorcycle damage repaired.*
